Minister Michaelia Cash has just announced the addition of 3 new occupations to be included on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL), for the purposes of skilled Migration to Australia. The new occupations to be included on the SOL are Chefs, Tilers and Bricklayers. The addition of these occupations to the SOL are as a result of a report from the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency (AWPA) which acts independently of Government to provide detailed analysis on Australia’s skill shortages.
Under the direction of the Minister for Trade and Investment, Minister; the Hon Andrew Robb, the AWPA analyses evidence such as the labour market, education and training, economic and demographic data with the objective of getting the balance of Australia’s skills needs right. This is particularly so in regional Australia, where there is a clear identification of a shortage of workers in both the hospitality and construction industries. Senator Cash said that adding Chefs to the SOL would provide greater flexibility for Australian Hospitality businesses to recruit qualified Chefs form overseas, when they cannot be sourced in the numbers required, from the local labour market.
The SOL is used for those applicants seeking to apply under Australia’s skill migration program, either under the independent or family sponsored points tested visa categories. Applicants will still be required to meet the criteria set out in the skilled points test system, for the purposes of skilled migration to Australia. All applicants will still be required to submit an Expression of Interest, before they may be invited to apply for a skilled migrant visa.
Note, there are currently 188 occupations contained on the SOL and the Government has indicated that there is no intention to remove any of those occupations from this list at this stage.
